GLOUCESTER TRIAL 3/12/06 Published: December 13, 2006

After a night of gale force winds and torrential rain, the Gloucester Sporting Trial of December 3rd was under threat of cancellation. The paddock field was too sodden to be usable, but thankfully David Halpin, whose land the Trial traditionally use, came to the rescue and allowed both competitors and officials to park up in his more solid farmyard. Amazingly the rain held off for most of the day, but the wet top surface of the hills proved tough going for the trials cars, with very few clear runs on Round 1, and not many more on Round 2. There were also more retirements than usual, including Julian Fack, normally a front-runner, and the LCC's own team of Nick Mason and Lyn Maddams who sportingly helped marshal after their car went out early in Round 2. Conditions had improved considerably by the afternoon and Round 3 was peppered with clear runs, but even so nobody complained of having too easy a time of it. Overall winners were Duncan Stephens and Andrew Gowen, who were also first in the Red Class, taking the Gloucester Trophy and Salver, with John Fack 2nd and Ian Wright 3rd. Winner of the Blue Class and the Thomas Challenge Cup was Roland Uglow, followed by George Watson and Stephen Barnes. Victory in the Green Class and the Committee Cup went to Nick Speed, with Anthony Lane 2nd and Ed Wells 3rd. Congratulations to all participants, and thanks to all helpers, for turning a potentially disasterous day into a highly successful one. |
