Victory - at a price! Published: August 31, 2006

Steve Long and Wendy Gibson continue their successful, if action-filled, season in the BMW Championship. At their last rally on 31 July, a missed call on Stage 1 meant that instead of taking a ninety degree right after a crest, they shot straight on - and met the landscape full in the face! The result was a front off-side wishbone, so badly bent that it had pushed the wheel right back into the footwell, which in turn had jammed the accelerator pedal. A fraught 2 minutes of bashing things back into shape with a rock got the car driveable again, though with a pronounced pull to the right and the front brakes barely functioning. A puncture then added to the calamity, losing them 9 minutes in all on Stage 1 and a further 4 minutes on Stage 2 before they could get the car into service for some proper repairs. Even so, some spirited driving ensured that the pair finisht the rally high enough up the score table to take overall lead in the Championship. So a not unsuccessful week-end after all, even if a rather expensive one! |
